Hey bird buds! It’s Cataleya here! And today we’re learning about a bird that looks like it came straight out of a storybook: the Resplendent Quetzal! 🌈✨
Here are 5 fun facts:
Quetzals looove fruit! They’re considered specialized fruit-eaters, but they’ll also snack on insects like wasps, ants, and larvae and even tiny frogs.
They live in magical forests! Quetzals need tropical cloud forests, which is why they’re found from Chiapas, Mexico all the way to Panama.
Baby quetzal facts! They usually lay two blue eggs, each about 3 centimeters long. The chicks hatch after about 17–18 days, and breeding season lasts from March to June.
Super tails take time! The male’s famous long tail feathers don’t start growing until he’s around 3 years old.
Boys vs. girls! Male quetzals can reach up to a meter long and weigh around half a pound because of their tail feathers. You can tell males and females apart by their chest color the male has a bright red chest, while the female’s is gray.
I think these birds are SO cute! They have big puppy-dog eyes, super long tails, and they even look like they’re glowing! ✨💚
Thanks for reading, bird buds! I hope you loved learning about the magical Resplendent Quetzal as much as I did! Come back next week for another feathery adventure! 🐦✨
