Hey bird buddies! It’s me, Cataleya, and today we’re learning about a bird with one of the

coolest hairdos in the bird world… the Hoopoe! This bird has an awesome feather crest that pops up like a mini fan!

Let’s check out 5 fun facts about this funky-looking bird:

  1. Hoopoes have long, curved beaks that they use to poke into the ground to find food like crickets, grasshoppers, beetles, and even moth and butterfly larvae. That’s a fancy way of saying they are expert bug hunters!

  2. The Common Hoopoe doesn’t make its own nest hole. Instead, it moves into holes made by other animals (like woodpeckers) or uses natural tree gaps or spaces in buildings.

  3. Hoopoes like to sunbathe! They spread out their wings and tail flat on the ground and tilt their head up. Scientists used to think it was defensive, but now it seems more like they’re just chilling in the sun.

  4. They also enjoy taking dust and sand baths to help keep their feathers clean and healthy.

  5. When excited or alarmed, they raise their crest feathers into a full fan just like they’re showing off their amazing hairstyle!

Hoopoes are adorable AND stylish! Their big feather crest probably makes cardinals and blue jays jealous 😂

That’s it for today, bird buddies! I hope you enjoyed learning about the fashion icon of the bird world the Hoopoe! Come back next week for another awesome bird! 🐦💛
